Happy Dominion Day!
July 1 used to be known as "Dominion Day", before a bunch of bureaucrats decided someone out there (read: Quebec nationalists) might be offended by the name and renamed it the unbelievably banal "Canada Day". The change was rammed through a House of Commons which didn't even have enough MPs to form a lawful quorum. Charles Moore has all the depressing details, and adds that he's still waiting for Quebec to return the favor and rename Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day "Jour Quebec".
For all my complaints, I still think this is the best country in the world. But the way we have sought to completely eliminate all traces of Canada's British origins, lest separatists be offended, is truly depressing.
