The Star vs. Daimnation!
I got an e-mail from a Torstar sales rep yesterday, advising me that this blog entry, in which I posted excerpts from an asinine Thomas Walkom column comparing George W. Bush unfavorably to Adolf Hitler, violates the Toronto Star's copyright. They're demanding that I remove the offending post immediately.
I've written back to advise that, in my opinion, the post falls within the ambit of "fair dealing" as permitted by section 29.1 of the federal Copyright Act, which allows reproduction of copyrighted materials for the purposes of criticism or review. Hopefully they'll back off. I don't know if any Canadian blogger has been sued for copyright infringement, but I don't want to be the first.
