The news I've been waiting for

CanJet, a discount airline which will fly you from Deer Lake (50km from Corner Brook) to Halifax for only $64.00, is going to add a daily flight between Deer Lake and St. John's. And even better, they say fares will start at the same price.

That low fare, of course, does not include HST, airport improvement fees or the various security and fuel surcharges we have to endure up here. But a one-way ticket should still come out below $100.00. To put that in perspective, a bus ticket from Corner Brook to St. John's is $79.00.

Newfoundland's two regional airlines, Air Labrador and PAL, charge at least $149.00 for the same flight, not including any taxes or surcharges. (Air Canada, of course, is even higher.) Presumably we'll see them reduce their fares in May, when CanJet begins the St. John's service.

Driving from here to St. John's costs me about $40.00 in gas - and takes 8 hours. I may never drive home again.
