Aristide's out
He's fled to the Dominican Republic, and plans to seek exile in Panama, Morocco or Taiwan. The chief justice of Haiti's Supreme Court is taking over as interim president.
I haven't written anything about Haiti lately, because I wasn't sure either Aristide or the rebels were deserving of support. It seems like that perenially blighted nation goes from one incompetent, corrupt kleptocracy to the next, and Aristide - initially the winner of a free election, but subsequently as "legitimately elected" as Yasser Arafat - did nothing to change that sorry history. Still, I was skeptical about the rebels being any better, either.
But when I read that Ramsey Clark's International Action Center, with its impeccable record of supporting the world's worst killers and tyrants, was suporting Aristide, well...I knew there was almost no possibility the rebels could be any worse. Thanks for helping me make up my mind, Mr. Clark.
