Zerb n' Zwicker
Antonia Zerbisias is using her column in Canada's largest newspaper to promote the 9/11 moonbat conference being held in Toronto this week. Unlike her former Star comrade, Michele Landsberg, she doesn't come out and say she believes Bush and the neocon cabal masterminded 9/11 themselves, but the tone of her column makes it perfectly clear where her sympathies lie. ("Citizens can choose to buy the official line on the events of Sept. 11, 2001 — or they can ask questions about holes in that story as big as the crater at Ground Zero. ...But at yesterday's opening session at least, not a tin-foil hat was in site among the mostly middle-aged crowd of 100. In fact, they looked like the kind of people you might see slinging hash for the homeless at a soup kitchen.")
There's a theory that people have serious trouble accepting the fact that one person, or a small group of people, can commit earth-shattering crimes against powerful people, which is why so many conspiracy theories about the JFK assassination have sprung up since 1963. Same thing here: Zerb chides mean old bloggers who "claim that those who challenge the idea that some suicidal Arabs armed with box cutters managed to outsmart the greatest technomilitary power history has ever known are 'conspirazoids,' 'left-wing loonies' or 'fanatical Muslims.'"
That's not quite true. Some of the theorists, like Justin Raimondo or Michael Rivero, are right-wing loonies. And will anyone at the conference tell us exactly how they would have stopped the attacks, armed with nothing more than the sketchy "warnings" which have come out during the investigation of 9/11? These are the same people who scream bloody murder about tighter security or increased surveillance now. God knows what they would have said before September 11.
Zerb throws up the same old questions, which have been answered time and time since the 9/11 conspirozoids first crawled out of their parents' basements. Why weren't fighter planes scrambled in time to stop the attacks? (They were - and, in any case, the Zwickers and Zerbs of the world would have gone absolutely mental had civilian airliners been shot down by the U.S. military.) Why has it taken so long for the official public inquiry into 9/11 to get moving? (Again, had the inqury begun on September 12 and ended before the end of the year, these same people would be screaming "whitewash!" and "cover-up!")
You see where this is going. These are people so obsessed with anti-American hatred that they simply cannot accept the United States being, in any way, a victim of September 11. They want to believe the military-industrial complex pulled this off, just like Oliver Stone warned them about, and they are not going to accept any evidence to the contrary. Any fact at all can be spun to "prove" Dubya/Cheney/the Mossad masterminded the attacks themselves.
9/11 conspiracy theorists are not Holocaust deniers (although nearly all Holocaust deniers are 9/11 conspiracy theorists as well). But their methodology is the same.
