THE MINISTRY OF TRUTH
As if the Globe and CTV were not bad enough already. Torstar and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan will each acquire 20% of Bell Globemedia from BCE, owner of the Globe and CTV (maybe BCE's going to be a phone company again, plus internet and satellite).
Meanwhile Ken Thomson's Woodbridge Company will increase its share of Bell Globemedia to 40%. Thomson is the richest person in Canada and the 15th richest in the world. Thomson sold control of the Globe to BCE in 2000.
So a left-wing paper and a left-wing union fund join forces with the country's greatest plutocrat. Only in Canada you say? What will the chattering classes say about this media concentration? Stinks to me: the largest daily, the soi-disant national newspaper, and the largest commercial television network all linked together. And all with headquarters in Toronto.
