It won't be Clyde

Will Clyde Wells run for the leadership of the federal Liberals, as Ed Hollett suggests? They could do worse, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Wells is still a controversial figure in federal circles because of his role in defeating the Meech Lake Accord in 1990, and I doubt even Liberals who supported his stance want to risk re-opening that ugly episode, especially after their support in Quebec tanked so badly on Monday. More importantly, Wells is now Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, and he would have no choice but to abandon that prestigious post if he engaged in partisan political activity once again. It's not like you can just take a leave of absence from something like this, when our judges are supposed to be "above politics".

I do think Wells wants to end up in Ottawa someday - in this building, not 24 Sussex Drive.
