Prime Minister Harper a war criminal? (Cannonball Press)

Toronto (CBP): Federal NDP leader Jack Layton is continuing his frenetic activity aimed at "making sure Canada is once again in the forefront of the struggle for peace and sanity in the world", as he put it in a statement issue today.

The statement released the text of a letter Mr Layton has sent to Ms Louise Arbour, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In the letter the NDP leader asks Ms Arbour to investigate whether Prime Minister Harper should be charged with war crimes on this basis:

Does the prime minister's failure to intevene immediately with the Canadian Forces to stop the unprovoked and illegal Ethiopian invasion of Muslim darfur constitute a criminal act in that this failure clearly condones both a brutal, militaristic violation of international law (especially the principles established by the Nuremberg Tribunal), and a clear example of religious stereotyping?

Mr Layton's statement concluded that "it was time to bring this rabid lapdog poodle of the mad Bushite junta to heel. Canadians want out of the 'axis of righteousness', and they want out now."

When asked to comment, Jane Taber of the Globe and Mail could respond with only one word: "Smokin'!".
