NDP wants UN force for Caledonia
A Cannonball Press report:
OTTAWA (CBP): The federal New Democratic Party has placed an advertisement in the Parliamentary Guardian seeking applicants to command and contribute to a neutral United Nations force, with a UN Charter Chapter VII mandate, "to restore international peace and security" in the strife-torn region of Caledonia, Ontario. The ad stated that a requirement for the mission was "expertise in disputes such as that held by Hezbollah, Hamas and al Qaeda." The ad went on to state that "bilingualism will be an asset." NDP insiders commented, according to Jane Taber of Bell Globemedia, that since Hezbollah is based in Lebanon many of its militants know both French and English.
Ms Taber added that the insiders had also taken note of the Palestinian flag flown by militants at Caledonia and that this had influenced the NDP's thinking about which applicants might have relevant expertise.
The ad concluded by saying that once applications are evaluated "the NDP will demand that the Bush-collaborating Harper régime insist the UN Security Council create a peacekeeping force for Caledonia led by the successful candidate chosen by Jack Layton."
The Cannonball Press asked Dawn Black, the NDP's defence critic, why foreign forces were needed in Canada. Ms. Black replied that the Canadian Forces might be seriously overstretched, especially if Harper and his devotees of George Bush's "War on Terror" responded positively to Jack's earlier calls for Canadian troops to participate in peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, Darfur, darfur and most recently, the Congo.
