Abandoned by CanJet

One of only two airlines flying from Western Newfoundland to the mainland - the other being Air Canada, of course - is getting out of the business altogether:

The Halifax-based discount carrier CanJet Airlines is pulling out of the scheduled airline business next week to focus on its charter business.

"With the rising business risks of operating a scheduled airline, I.M.P. has decided to suspend year-round scheduled airline service and focus on their increasing charter business," IMP chairman and CEO Ken Rowe said Tuesday morning.

He promised to offer alternative travel arrangements for anyone booked on CanJet flights scheduled after Sept. 10, the last day of scheduled service, or give full refunds to ticketholders.

CanJet flights were roomier, faster, friendlier and usually cheaper than Air Canada, so I should have known it was too good to be true. Hopefully WestJet is willing to take its place at Deer Lake airport.
