Jack Layton demands Canada withdraw from the UN
A Cannonball Press report:
TORONTO (CBP): Federal NDP leader Jack Layton, in an interview on the CBC's The National tonight, demanded that the Harper regime immediately move to withdraw Canada from the United Nations."I am shocked and appalled, in fact my guts are churning with rage and despair, to learn that the UN Security Council today unanimously approved [full text of Resolution 1707 (2006) at the link - MC] the extension of NATO's terrorist-like mission in Afghanistan," said Mr Layton.
"Canadians are not war-mongers", he stated, adding that "They want no part of any organization that should be so crazed as to sanction the senseless violence being perpetrated by George Bush and his NATO lackeys against the innocent civilians of Afghanistan. What shows that the UN is now truly beyond the pale is that the Security Council actually says there is a need to strengthen ISAF, just as George Bush is demanding."
The NDP leader proposed that Canada should instead apply at once to join the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), noting that "At this very movement the Movement is having its fourteenth summit meeting in Havana under the leadership of that great leader and democratic socialist, Fidel Castro--a person who truly believes in universal health care."
"Harper's hapless foreign minister Peter MacKay should be on next plane to Cuba seeking Fidel's blessing for Canada's application," Mr Layton stressed in concluding the interview.
Jane Taber of Bell Globemedia could only say in comment "Muy caliente!"
Personal observations: I wonder how much coverage the UNSC resolution will get in the Canadian media Wednesday, especially this bit in the UN News Centre story:
In a unanimously adopted resolution, Council members also called on UN Member States to contribute greater personnel, equipment and funding so that the force can be more effective.
And Jack might want to look a bit more closely at the anti-Western NAM and see what even they think of the Taliban (at very end of story):
In Cuba, a summit of countries of the Non-Aligned Movement issued a draft closing statement expressing support for Kabul and their "profound" concern over "terrorist groups including former Taliban" in the south and east of Afghanistan.
The NAM can support the government in Kabul and call the Taliban "terrorists" but not the NDP. What's beyond left field?

Update: As far as I can see the Canadian media essentially ignored the UNSC resolution. No wonder our public are ignorant.
