Ottawa: Hope springs eternal/Klingon wins
Larry O'Brien, high-tech millionaire, will be our new mayor. Mr O'Brien with 48% as of 2040: a huge margin against an incumbent (Liberal) mayor, third--humiliated, and a strong socialist candidate, second.
But most obnoxious and noisome leftie, Alex Cullen, retained his seat as city councillor.
Toronto the brain-dead.
"Unbelievable how fast the votes were tabulated" (Steve Madely, CFRA). The electronic voting system is simple and clear. Fill in the blank with your pencil. Ballot is run through machine which counts votes but paper ballot is retained in case of recount. Why not in the US?
Hoo-ah! And a great day for Lowell Green, on vacation.
Mark C.
Update: Voter turnout 53%. Outstanding for a civic election. I think a lot of people really were angry about the lack of direction in the city government, and about the increasing decreptitude of the city itself. But, damn it, all incumbent councillors (the great majority of the council) were re-elected. Dissatisfaction and attention go only so far.
