A disaster four decades in the making
Popular Mechanics lists ten cars that drove car buyers away from GM:
Legend has it that when Chevrolet Division Manager John DeLorean went to the GM Proving Grounds to get his first look at a prototype of the new 1971 Chevrolet Vega, the front of the car literally fell off onto the ground. But that bad omen didn't keep DeLorean from putting the Vega on the market.
The saddest thing about GM's recent troubles is that the company is making some truly world-class automobiles. For real, this time. (Jeremy Clarkson and James May, neither of whom will pass up a good opportunity to slam American cars, loved the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V.) But how do you convince the man who once owned an Olds Diesel to buy a Malibu?
