Comments: Pacer leads the pack

The Honda Fit may be a good vehicle, but ye-uck.

But it's all personal taste. I doubt people who buy the Fit, Tribeca etc. think they're ugly.

"who makes the ugliest cars in 2007"

With the Aztec off the road, it's hands-down the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Comment by PhantomObserver:

I'd amend that to the PT Cruiser Convertible. The hardtop version still looks pretty decent.

I'd also say that the Smart ForTwo is a contender, as well as the Dodge Nitro.

The Honda Element: Looks like a generic SUV responding to a midlife crisis by trying to look young and trendy, but ending up by only looking foolish.

The Hummer H2. Apart from getting 8-10 mpg., this piece of crap looks like the offspring of a turd and a brick.

Now if one wanted a Humvee with attitude ("Here is an interesting photo of the Cheetah equipped with rocket launchers."):

They just don't make things like they used to.

Dawg:

PhantomObserver sort of beat you - although he/she waffled a bit. I don't find it ugly as much as I consider it a clown car that belongs in a Shriners parade.

Comment by JGS:

I was a bit incensed at the Hagerty survey in the Post over one car in particular...The Corvair became "infamous" but was certainly not ugly. Compare it to other 1960 cars. In fact it was the inspiration for several other car designs in Europe (NSU Prinz) and Japan (Hino Contessa).

Many people incl. myself quite like the Fit, Smart etc and for the most part I've always thought the ability to generate love/hate controversy can in fact be the mark of good design (as with art). But sometimes there are genuine clangers and Hagerty does indeed have most of them captured...Usually they are cars developed in a hurry to jump on a trend, eg Pacer and Aztek - the cynicism behind their development ultimately bites back, which does show that sometimes justice prevails...

My apologies to Phantom Observer--I'd missed the reference.

Every time I see one of those things I just go nuts. It reinforces every dumb stereotype about the tree-hugging Left that I can imagine.

As I asked my stepson yesterday, and perhaps someone here can provide an answer, why can't all that technology and material be fashioned into something resembling a two-seater sports car, instead of an outhouse on wheels?

Dr Dawg: How about this (just a bit longer than the second generation of the new Mini):

I dunno, I think that the Smart cars are a bit cool in a retro "1975 vision of 2005" kind of way.

Comment by Sigivald:

"Classic car" collectors don't like the looks of cars that don't look like "classic cars".

Film at 11, who cares?

Me, I think a 2CV looks better than a Stingray Corvette... but I've never liked them, and the 2CV has Character.

And then there was always BMW's attempt at an afforable car, the Isetta, although like Smart cars they are kind of cool in a retro way. [External Link]

Comment by John B:

If I was driving that Isetta, I would be terrified of colliding with an empty coffee cup. Even Chinese cars offer better protection. OTH - I bet it sure promotes defensive driving.

"If I was driving that Isetta, I would be terrified of colliding with an empty coffee cup." No kidding.

Fellow I knew once called that kind of car a "Jaws of Life special."

Comment by John B:

Dawg: No need for the Jaws of Life, I'm thinking more along the line of a simple can opener.
