"The fact that we've moved from peacekeeping to war fighting ... the traditional role of the military has changed," he said.

When are people going to wake up? Tell World War 2 veterans that the traditional role of the military is not war fighting.

Peacekeeping was an aberation if it ever existed at all. Peacemaking, maybe. But that is still war by any measure.

"demonic empire to our south"

More precisely, "We're the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car-wreck and descended from a stock-market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France, and Spain, roll them all together, and it wouldn't give us room to park our cars. We're the big boys, Jack, the original giant, economy-sized new and improved butt-kickers of all time... And we've got an American Express credit card limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go."

Comment by John B:

John above beat me to it. I almost gagged when I read that line. Are people like Cliff White that stupid or uneducated about Canada's military history, or are they simply lying?

From Chris Taylor at "The Torch"--worth the read:

Good on him. Hopefully Mr. Stoffer will manage to talk some sense into his leader as well.

Chris; they're more likely to take away his party membership! Not exactly the 'Party Line'; or more to the point Bin Layton's...

Mark commented earlier on the "peacekeepers" r' us fabrication.

Give 'em tasers instead of guns, that should defeat the Taliban.

Comment by TimR:

Without a military how are we going to stop the Americans from coming in and stealing our water as the C of C has been predicting ever since the free trade agreement? Bet they didn't think of that.

Comment by chip:

The Council of Canadians advocates a decision that would lead to the widespread murder and enslavement of the Afghan people by a medieval theocracy.

And they call the Canadian military killers?

BRUCE!! Man, I dig O'Rourke.

I tellz ya, it was Margaret Atwood who single-handedly made me re-think where I was going. Her "Handmaid's Tale" was such adolescent drivel I had to toss it three-quarters of the way through.

I traded up to Margaret Laurence and W.O Mitchell, to Robertson Davies...

These days I'm reading Michael Ledeen, Bailyn, Tocqeville. Canucks such as Steyn kick ass, too.

Ran: Robertson Davies is a truly great writer. Pity he was a white, protestant male.

Comment by Ran:

Mark, yipes! Davies is one of my all-time favourite writers. I have recommended his books here in the States to friends, especially to bright, young minds.

Mitchell's "The Vanishing Point" haunts me. There are (were) some marvelous Canadian writers [ though, I never understood Attie's phenomenal over-rating.]

Oh yes! "Solomon Gursky Was Here"! I laugh every time I think of Richler's magical genius. That last scene, where the airplane flies low overhead...

Wow! Coming from the mouth of an NDP-er. I am impressed. In answer to his question, yes, it appears they do think kids are stupid...and the rest of Canada, too.

Ran, have you read Barney's Version? Another great Richler read. An airplane also plays a small role in it as well, and right at the end.

Comment by John B:

While I haven't read the novel, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz is one of my favourite films (and not just Canadian films). Dreyfuss was perfectly cast in that role - I also had a soft spot for Micheline Lanctot.

Comment by j:

Peter was too close to the CF for Layton's liking, that's why he replaced him with Red Dawn.

But the Council of Canadians is no friend of the NDP anyways. Barlow will not lend her endorsement to the NDP during election time.

And as far as those CF ads being "too American like", here's one from the Royal Marines...

And this one from the Dutch....
