This is the species of dirty pool played by the left-wing media (a redundancy) in the months and years after the Sept. 11 attacks.
The Clinton government let this problem fester for its entire term in office, doing very little beyond was necessary for PR purposes.
The Aug 2001 report that was made so much of in Moore’s “Propaganda 9/11” and so on was ordered, in the first place, by the Bush government when it entered office and discovered (aside from the vandalism inflicted upon the White House by its previous occupants) that there was no counter-terrorism strategy at all.
As Damian stated on the fourth anniversary of the attacks, WHAT IF the Bush government had acted precipitously to prevent an attack on American soil that no one knew when was to come?
Naturally, the usual suspects now pointing fingers at the Bush gov for “not doing anything” about the obvious threat, would instead be blaming Chimpy McHaliburton for “creating hysteria” and “engaging in racism” for prosecuting and persecuting Arabs.
thanks
Yeah, how come we never hear about Clinton and what HE didn't do? Like take out Osama when he had the chance?

Mark Steyn wrote a column in the National Post several months after the attack detailing the many clues that could have, and should have, alerted the authorities. The problem is that such clues never made it to the higher levels of government, all being discarded along the wayside as unimportant or politically incorrect (e.g. profiling). I'm referring to surly Arab student pilots, other student pilots who had little aptitude for flying and/or didn't profess to care about landing an airplane, visas overstayed, surly attitudes towards government employees. The list went on and on, but none of this came to light until well after the attack.
Regarding Zacarias Moussaoui: "
"The F.B.I. agent who arrested and interrogated Zacarias Moussaoui just weeks before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks told a jury on Monday how he had tried repeatedly to get his superiors in Washington to help confirm his certainty that Mr. Moussaoui was involved in an imminent terrorist airline hijacking plot."
"But, said the agent, Harry Samit, he was regularly thwarted by senior bureau officials whose obstructionism he later described to Justice Department investigators as "criminally negligent" and who were, he believed, motivated principally by a need to protect their careers."
"Mr. Samit's testimony paralleled the complaints of Coleen Rowley, an agent and lawyer in the Minneapolis office who sent a letter on May 21, 2002, to the bureau director, Robert S. Mueller III, bitterly criticizing the performance of F.B.I. headquarters agents in handling the Moussaoui case."

Lot's of warning and opportunity to thwart the plot, but hardly Bush's fault.
There was one good piece of intelligence that might have drawn US attention to a possible attack on Pearl Harbor; it was not followed up on:

'Sept. 24: The "bomb plot" message from Japanese naval intelligence to Japan's consul general in Honolulu requesting a grid of exact locations of ships in Pearl Harbor is deciphered [in Washington - MC]. The information is not shared with the Hawaii's Adm. Kimmel and Gen. Short.'

According to John Pilger:
Jimmy Carter "established the mujahedin in Afghanistan as a terrorist organisation designed to overthrow the Soviet Union, and from which came the Taliban and al-Qaeda." [External Link]
Of course, Pilger thinks that overthrowing the Soviet Union was a Bad Thing.
"update" -
Damian, point taken.
I guess what disgusts me, personally, in all of this blame game is the hypocrisy of the critics of the Bush government, with regard to its action and inaction in the face of intelligence indicating, that, indeed, there was a threat.
As I stated, these same people would have been condemning the Bush gov no matter what they did.
thanks
It is a no win situation, unless you catch the guys just as they about to push the button or whatever, you either get accused of 'profiling' being or alarmist in order to curtail civil liberties, or if the terrorists succeed, then you get accused of negligence or worse, actually doing the deed as in 9/11.
Before the attacks in London the leftie chattering classes accusing Blair of trying to scare the British public and exaggerating the problem, and the BANG!
"I'm referring to surly Arab student pilots,..."
Yeah - cause a bad attitude is pretty uncommon amongst students.
"...other student pilots who had little aptitude for flying and/or didn't profess to care about landing an airplane,..."
Likewise, a lack of ability is generally not an indication that daddy has too much money or kid has too little ability: I usually suspect undercover terrorists when I run into a no-talent twerp in my everyday life.
"...visas overstayed,..."
Well, what more proof do you need?
"...surly attitudes towards government employees."
I'll remember to speak softly the next time Revenue Canada calls, since a surly attitude is proof of membership in a terrorist conspiracy.
DCardno:
One would think a student pilot who didn't care how to land a large airplane (regardless of daddy's money) would perhaps set off alarm bells. Even more so when the person is Muslim of Moroccan descent. Sept. 11 wasn't the first time Muslims had attempted to use commercial aircraft as a weapon against a western country.
Regarding Atta and his accomplices, perhaps you had better read the first person accounts of the flight school instructors first. Steyn also detailed the surliness, in this case a general hostility towards the U.S. expressed towards government employees. Start connecting the dots and the bigger picture emerges. Ignore the evidence and you get Sept. 11 or the London subway bombings.
I hope you don't work for CSIS.
