Comments: Sudanese justice, and other oxymorons

"You’re really twisting the ol’ knife there, Sudan."

It seems obvious enough to me that this "punishment" is a way of getting the woman to safety, while still saving face domestically. You'd think that someone with the foreign policy expertise of a "sex columnist" would have caught that.

Good point Otter, I also get the impression that this is a compromise that is meant to end the situation with Gibbons at home in London and Khartoum able to keep a "tough on blasphemy" image.

Doesn't change the flagrant idiocy of punishing any foreign teacher for their dedication to education. I mean, seriously, she wasn't in Sudan to make quick money, she was there to help kids and I suspect that many of them will have learned an important lesson from this.

I think the most appropriate response would be a gigantic Flickr group where people from around the world could share photos of objects which they have named Mohammed.

Plus, Yahoo owns Flickr and seeing as they are perfectly willing to kowtow to the Chinese over censorship, it would seem that they deserve a chance to assert their commitment to free speech in the rest of the world.

"Get jailed in Sudan for giving a teddy bear the Muslim world's most common name in Sudan, and it's your own fault for not knowing better."

They said the same thing about Rushdie and the Danish cartoonists. Leftists only support free speech when it bashes Christians, conservatives or Israel. Everyone else's pwecious feewings must be protected.

I am outraged and revulsed by the actions of a section of the Sudanese who are hellbent on punishing this poor woman.Shame on them!It is Muslims like these who sully Islam and its followers. The British Government is spineless;it should threaten to cut diplomatic links with that country and make arrangements to get this woman out of there.A crying disgrace.I hope that she returns safe and sound.

I am equally outraged that this bastard got off so easily. My blood boils at the injustice of it all. This monster should be put away for life;I cannot fathom why he got only 7 years.

The children should get the lash since they actually chose the name, it would be a good Islamic lesson in how to be proper savages.

Welcome to Canada's "justice" system - firmly in control of Liberal bleeding heart appointees. Life in prison isn't good enough for this creep.
