Comments: The writing's on the wall for Romney
Comment by Ran:

"if the alternative is a Democratic president"?

It isn't about "Republican" v "Democratic"! It's about Conservative v Liberal.

By that measure, I'm convinced that there's not a whit of difference between Hillary and John except on national defense. My guts tell me Hillary will be superior to McCain (and Obama) on that issue. I mean that genuinely.

I honestly do not know how or if I'll vote. Something tells me that Coulter's support of Hillary may be the smarter choice.

And read this carefully: The anger on the Right against McCain is a priori to Malkin and Rush. McCain is a symptom of a Party that has time and again sold-out and marginalized its base. In other words, this is an argument between the Base and the RNC. It runs far deeper than McCain and far beyond Limbaugh.

On The Other Hand, Romney isn't out yet. Ohio's primary is coming up... and in that poll, I KNOW how I'll vote.

Ran,

Think Hillarycare and other new entitlement programs that will never go away. Consider that the next President will likely have several Supreme Court appointments and that McCain helped get both Roberts and Alito confirmed.

Consider their recent respective ratings by both conservative and liberal groups.

If the cultural right wants to sit this one out, that's their privilege, but they'll marginalize themselves if they do and destroy the conservative coalition that has governed for all but 8 of the past 27 years.

Gang of 14! Damn, the guy nearly sunk 'em, Bruce! But you have a point... Another Souter or three would be oh-so preferable to a Ginsberg.

"Consider their recent respective ratings by both conservative and liberal groups." Non-weighted ratings!! Taxes, "Climate Change" hysteria, amnesty, border defense... Who said anything about "cultural" conservatism? I don't care if McCain turns out to be a closet lesbian atheist with a dozen abortions in her past.

Taxes.
Judges.
"Climate Change" BS.
12 million invaders.
Open borders.
The First Amendment and
"Fairness Doctrine".

It's too bad Jeffords beat him to the punch. We'd be seeing a three-way Demo race today.

The Base isn't marginalizing itself, Bruce. It is being marginalized by a Primary system that encourages "moderates" and "undeclared" and in many cases Democrats to pick Republican nominees.

It is being marginalized by a shi-shi Country Club Republican elite that frankly looks down its nose at conservative rabble. My father-in-law is one of them. Spoiled, wealthy, arrogant as frickin' Hell. LIBERAL. Guess - just guess who he's supporting?

Bruce - not cranky with you. Nuthin' personal. And yeah, people such as Victor Davis Hanson support McCain, so I may review my angers later.
