I think I have too; is that the Palestinian "Security" Forces graduation salute?
Posted at 2008-02-18 12:48:07 [PermaLink]You mean the Roman salute? Perhaps you were thinking of China? Or maybe the Roman republic? Or middle east armies before there was a Roman republic. Or maybe some documentary of the United States in the 1800s?

Posted at 2008-02-18 13:12:22 [PermaLink]Kevin, what you refer to as the Roman Salute took on a very different meaning in the 30s and 40s and is currently used primarily by neo-NAZIs and by Arab groups that would wipe out the Jewish state.
Context has meaning, and what was appropriate before the 1930s has a very different meaning now. But, then, I think you know that.
I don't dispute your point that it is inappropriate but there is at least one other context for that salute: it has been used in the ME for ages and is still used by regimes that, while badly behaved, have no interest in killing Jewish people at all.
I just find these overly simplistic symbol wielding posts annoying. This time my annoyance got the better of my judgement.
Quite right, Kevin, our local Kiwanis uses the same salute and some of their best friends are Jewish. Of course, in response, the local Lion's Club sings the Internationale to open their meetings. When will we all finally learn that boys will be boys?

Ah yes, those playful boys and their service organizations, Kiwanis, Lions, Hizbollah, Hamas, al Qaeda. What great jokers they are. [External Link]
OK so the salute and the swastika.. out the door with them, they're forever tainted. How about the Volkswagens then? Why do they get a pass?
Speaking of Mr Mustache... I stumbled across a great webcomic.
