I had high hopes for the Astra but was somewhat disappointed when I inspected them at the Toronto auto show. The interiors didn't seem up to the competition. Although I haven't driven one, I think I would still prefer the Mazda3 or the VW Rabbit (assuming reliability has improved). Our Mazda3 is four years old with over 100,000 km. and has been perfect.

Having been impressed with the Astras I'd seen in Europe, I was also disappointed at the Saturn-badged version, although the XR is better (but over $22k, which gets you a fully-kitted Mazda 3 Sport with a more powerful 2.3). The Saturn Aura, however, continues to be IMO one of the most impressive GM products, and I was surprised to find I still much prefer it to its new Malibu brother.
