She's an actress, she gets by on looks, not brains.
Is she blond and does she have an IQ of "D cup"
Fred; she's French, I think that trumps the blonde~D-cup profile...;)
Posted at 2008-03-01 18:19:12 [PermaLink]A lot of quite successful actors and actresses are credulous. I'm not being facetious but I honestly think that some of them are good at letting directors mould their on screen personalities because they are highly suggestible. If they were highly intelligent they couldn't do the job.
That doesn't apply to everyone who acts, some of them perform by getting to understand a character rather than letting the directors and screenwriters mould them but it does apply to a lot of them.
"the actress faces a potential backlash in the US"
Hardly! Welcome to the A list Ms. Cotillard.
Yup, and every single Frenchman was in the resistance. There was no collaboration with the Nazis.

I wonder if she still watches "The View," now that Rosie's not around anymore to give her physics lessons.
Cheese-eating surrender monkeys live!
Posted at 2008-03-02 02:56:33 [PermaLink]This is really disappointing. She was superb in La Vie en Rose and in a couple of interviews that I've seen seemed very articulate and modest. She was very humble in her acceptance speech.
I would like to think that she's extremely naive rather than stupid. But, unfortunately, it appears that I'm wrong.
Fred,
"She's an actress, she gets by on looks, not brains. "
Let's not forget that certain Western/Waterloo professors seem to be getting by on something else as well.
"The first element, called a radar swap, involves in-the-air substitution of one aircraft for another, particularly when the transponders of the aircraft are turned off. The second element employs remote control technology to guide aircraft that have been prepared in advance to fly into pre-designated targets. The third element combines telephonic voice mimicry with a few items of personal intelligence about the caller being simulated. The last element has been explored elsewhere. (Dewdney 2004)
The scenario explored here, called Operation Pearl, has been described in sufficient operational detail that sound judgments can be made about a) feasibility and b) consistency with evidence on the ground. At the time of this writing it is probably the best available description of what probably took place on September 11, 2001."

It seems that Hollywood doesn't appreciate American actors anymore. All the Oscars for acting went to Europeans; the results were exactly the same as the Brit awards aired a couple of weeks previous. Maybe that's why nobody is watching anymore. It's been like this for a few years; Judi Dench, Kate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman are nominated most every year. As for 9-11 , doesn't most of Hollywood share Cotillard's views?
Posted at 2008-03-02 07:05:11 [PermaLink]So Cotillard joins the ever-expanding category of Actors Who Think 9/11 Was Staged By The Government. This puts her in the glorious company of Rosie O'Donnell and Charlie Sheen. Next up: Actors Who Think Elvis Was Abducted By Aliens, and how we should believe them because they're actors and therefore our intellectual superiors.
Posted at 2008-03-02 07:31:50 [PermaLink]The function of an entertainer is to entertain, not dispense wisdom, and it's on that basis the I judge them. I couldn't care less about their religious or political views. Some, such as Tom Selleck or John Malkovich, would probably be interesting to talk to over a beer. Other, such as Tom Cruise and Marion Cotillard, most likely would not. But that's irrelevant to job.
Posted at 2008-03-02 09:46:03 [PermaLink]Bruce; 'Tom' would probably be interesting to talk to, over a beer. MORE interesting after 1/2 a doz...:)
Posted at 2008-03-02 11:22:56 [PermaLink]Cruise not Selleck; sorry for the confusion.

To an extent, although I also judge them on whether they appreciate that fundamental fact. I applaud the actor / actress who responds to a political or philosophical question with the preface that "I am no more qualified to answer this than anyone esle..." - and even better if that's their only response.
Dan,
Isn't that the point where Cruise starts jumping on the furniture? Better that, though, than discussing the finer points of L. Ron Hubbard's literary oeuvre and Scientology.
Bruce; after 1/2 doz. brewskis it's astounding how much one's mind expands! (Let alone one's bladder) :)
Posted at 2008-03-02 19:38:40 [PermaLink]The fact Marion Cotillard is an actress has been pointed out several times. Keep in mind this from a master, Alfred Hitchcock (I'm paraphrasing). When asked about his reputation for treating his actors like children, Hitch replied: "of course, they live in a world of make believe. How else could you treat them".
DCardno: Re: "I applaud the actor / actress who responds to a political or philosophical question with the preface that "I am no more qualified to answer this than anyone esle..." - and even better if that's their only response."
You may or may not have seen this (the clip has been on TV many times) but after Elvis' comeback in the late 60's when he started performing at venues like Las Vegas, a reporter asked him about his opinion on the war in Vietnam (circa 1969-70). Elvis simply replied that he was an entertainer only and refused to discuss the war.
John B - I have never seen that Elvis clip, but it might even lead me to forgive the sequined jumpsuit.
Well... probably not; but almost!
dcardno: Keep in mind that Elvis himself had served two years in the U.S. Army. Granted, he was a draftee whose service took place in Germany during peacetime. But by the standards of today's entertainers who make pronouncements on military matters, that would make him practically Audie Murphy.
Posted at 2008-03-03 02:51:48 [PermaLink]The worst example was that last year, one of the actresses of CSI was voted "Smartest Person on TV" or something stupid like that.
Well, duh. Give me good writers, decent directors and multiple takes and I'd be an expert on anything you could imagine. Why do you think David Suzuki is considered such an expert on things outside of his expertise. Or why do so many people think Alex Trebek is a genius because he can read a cue card with the answer on it (or question to be most accurate).
Scary thing is, though: these fanboys and girls are in the jury pool and can can vote....
dcardno: Here is the Elvis interview. Class act - apart from the clothes ;-)

Too bad other entertainers don't follow this example.
