Well, AC used to be a substantial step up from the US lines, is now roughly the same although for the most part a newer fleet and generally just a bit slicker & more professional overall. The only bad AC service experiences I've had have been with airport ground staff in Chicago & LaGuardia, never any problems in flight... WestJet is great, I agree. Of the US lines I find Delta the best- and much improved in the last wee while- & US Airways tangibly the worst. I'd recommend AirTran for US discount travel if the routes work for you (being TO-based, we catch them from Buffalo to FL) as it is easy to upgrade to a biz-class seat (although same service) for $25-$50.
