Comments: McCain and Hagee
Comment by Ran:

"The stupid pricks in the GOP's evangelical base hate McCain and he isn't real fond of them either."

Sez less about the topic and more about the writer, methinks. Those "stupid prick" evangelical neighbors of mine express themselves more intelligently and considerately... Perhaps that guy should be writing for the New York Times. They deserve each other.

Skippy talks about pretty much everyone that way (and bless him for it).

I am beginning to think that Hilary has a chance of winning this thing.

As crazy as that sounds!

Did anyone else catch her interview will bill oreilly? I thought that took real guts and she handled herself well. As insane as "taking on OPEC" sounds, the methods she described when pressed by Bill will resonate with the American public. She can also now mock the wacko ramblings of both Obama and McCain's preachers and come off looking like the rational candidate.

Comment by Bruce Rheinstein:

Because seeking the endorsement of an influential, but nutty, minister is the equivalent of having a racist, anti-American, hate-spewing lunatic as your spiritual advisor and family pastor for the past two decades... Strange that those who condemn McCain for seeking the endorsement of Hagee seldom object to the connection between the far more pernicious Rev. Sharpton and various Democrats.

McCain is staying above the Wright fray for a very basic tactical reason, which Napoleon summed up as "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." McCain is allowing Hillary and her friends in the media do the dirty work on Obama.

Comment by John Palubiski:

The comparison is false.

Wright's hatred of America is laced with racial overtones; it is typically Afro Far Right.

The views of McCain's pastor demonise people for their views, not their genetics.

Wright finds America odious because of Whitey.

Hagee feels America is off course because of left/liberal, anti-Christian ideologues.

Wright, then, attacks people for just being who they are; Hagee restricts his venom to viewpoints he disagrees with.

Comment by Bruce Rheinstein:

John, McCain is a member of the North Phoenix Baptist Church. His family pastor is Dan Yeary. [External Link]

Yeary ≠ Hagee

"Hagee also called Hurricane Katrina "the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans." because the city was planning a gay pride parade. "

And some blamed it on George Bush for not following Kyoto.

What is it about religious fervour and NOLA?

Comment by Alan K. Henderson:

"If any Republican can win without evangelicals, it's John McCain."

That's one of the most idiotic remarks I've ever read. It assumes that he's a strong candidate. He is not; he alienates much of his own party. He got the nomination because of non-Republican votes, thanks to the obscentiy of open primaries, and because the conservative vote was split.

He can win the general election if he faces an evem weaker Democratic candidate. Moderates still tend to prefer real Democrats over fake Republicans, so he can't do it without conservative votes. How does he alienate evangelical conservatives without alienating non-evangelical ones?

On NOLA, maybe it (and the rest of Louisiana) are cursed not because of divine wrath but because it derives much of its political culture from the French. I think Canadians know about that sort of thing :-)
