Great autoblog article. Every car gets its own club, so it shouldn't be surprising at the Aztek club (check out the comment on Autoblog, tho')...I've driven a Aztek, at a GM promotional day when they first came out. Like everything on the Venture platform, it is an absolute pillock on the road. Versatile, yes, but very cheaply made, poor quality materials and trim, and that's all before you open your eyes and look at the thing. Apparently Wayne Cherry rammed the Aztek project through GM management against several vetoes - laudatory commitment, but certainly refelcting a misunderstanding of the admittedly fuzzy motivation of the SUV buyer. Pity he didn't spend the political capital on something attractive. However, I don't think it is any uglier than the Hummer H2, and some people love those (although I hear sales have plummeted and it is already out of fashion).

(Sorry Dan, had ta...)
"Sorry Dan?" No apology necessary, I HATED those things. Sort of the same concept as those false scene fronts you see on Hollywood sets. Looks like something on first glance but absolutely nothing to back it up. Hopefully the bozos that came up with that stinker have moved on to another line of work.
You want to sleep in your car...cheap? Buy an older van. Did all that stuff back in the '70s.
I remember seeing them when they first rolled out and I rather liked them. I was tired of seeing new cars and trucks that looked like every other car and truck. Pity it wasn't much an SUV or casual vehicle.

Posted at 2004-11-05 20:37:08 [PermaLink]I was thinking I should get some kind of vehicle with a little extra room for guitars, amps and my bike.
And then I'm going past my local garage and there's a great looking full-size early 90s Chev for sale. And I realize that in the back seat and giant trunk there's all the room I need without getting a minivan or SUV (not that's there's anything wrong with that!).
But then they sold it. I tell ya, ya snooze, ya lose. But I'm keeping my eyes open. I'm seeing a lot of older Cadillacs for sale. They're soooo fine....
Okay, I just thought "old hearse" and now I'm scared. I'm not the most sensitive person in the world, but that would be just a little too much death vibe for me. It's a sensible suggestion, however.
Here's something I always thought was cool. Years back I owned a Ford Ranchero and I always liked those car/truck things. Apparently Cadillac makes, or used to, a version for use in funerals as "flower cars" although I've never saw one in real life. I seem to remember a character in Alice's Restaurant had one - needless to say the name plate "flower car" was featured prominently.
Old hearse. Now I'm scared to go to the basement to work out.;)
Voon; you could pick up a little extra cash in the spring by doing the grad party limo thing.
