You think 1991 was a bad year, try 1996.... The Macarena was on that list twice!
Posted at 2005-08-29 10:46:34 [PermaLink]Sigh. It doesn't pay to be getting old and it sure doesn't pay to have graduated highschool in the disco era. Case in point, I give you the top 15 songs from 1977:
1. Tonight's The Night, Rod Stewart
2. I Just Want To Be Your Everything, Andy Gibb
3. Best Of My Love, Emotions
4. Love Theme From "A Star Is Born", Barbra Streisand
5. Angel In Your Arms, Hot
6. I Like Dreamin', Kenny Nolan
7. Don't Leave Me This Way, Thelma Houston
8. (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher, Rita Coolidge
9. Undercover Angel, Alan O'Day
10. Torn Between Two Lovers, Mary MacGregor
11. I'm Your Boogie Man, K.C. and The Sunshine Band
12. Dancing Queen, Abba
13. You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Leo Sayer
14. Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffet
15. Telephone Line, Electric Light Orchestra
Except for #15 (which everyone has sung when their drunk on Margarita's in some Mexican resort) what a load of dreck.
#14 not #15 - and there isn't a Margarita in sight!!
Posted at 2005-08-29 10:56:43 [PermaLink]1966 - not a bad year.
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Righteous Brothers - Soul and Inspiration
Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City, Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind
Beatles - We Can Work it Out, Paperback Writer, Nowhere Man
Also Stevie Wonder, Rolling Stones, Motown groups, Simon and Garfunkel, Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels, Percy Sledge, Young Rascals.
Not a bad year at all.
I could use a new djembe, but how does your link help me find the top 100 list?!?
Posted at 2005-08-29 11:34:44 [PermaLink]I picked this meme up from you... and wished I didn't. 1986! Oy vey! The results are here: [External Link]
Posted at 2005-08-29 11:42:42 [PermaLink]OK, for those as slow-witted as me -- enter the year in the search box on the upper left.
This will take me a while to do (those greedy capitalists expect me to do work at work!) but, WTF? I've never heard of half of these! There are top 10 songs I've never heard of! No wonder I was such a loser in high school!
And the rest of you can stop complaining. How about a list with Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time" in the top 10? Seriously, I'm wavering between The Jets and El Debarge for my #1!
I've got to step in here and defend the 1986 list. I'd buy that boxed set.
Long live the 80s.
Oh boy...talk about drecks..check out my year of 1980! eek.
Posted at 2005-08-29 14:52:57 [PermaLink]Hey, at least all of you who graduated in the 80s have music that's so cheesy and awful, it strangely becomes hilariously good.
I, on the other hand, had to relive the musical horrors of 1997. Massive shuddering going on.
More scary facts: According to [External Link], the top 10 selling singles of the 90s were:
1 One Sweet Day Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men
2 Macarena Los Del Rio
3 I'll Make Love To You Boyz II Men
4 Un-Break My Heart Toni Braxton
5 Candle In The WInd 97 Elton John
6 End Of The Road Boyz II Men
7 I Will Always Love You Whitney Houston
8 The Boy Is Mine Brandy & Monica
9 I Swear All -4 -One
10 I'll Be Missing You Puff Daddy & Faith Evans
Aaaaah! I think a good torture regimen would be forcing someone to listen to those 10 songs in a row.
Another 1986 list...

Joe, thanks for your support, but I'm still considering going back to high school to get a another shot at this.
I second Boudica on 1977. It was the first year of the Disco era, 1977-1980, and it wasn’t just the music. Bad taste was king. You could write books about the decade of dreadful taste. In fact, James Lileks has. [External Link]
Posted at 2005-08-29 16:23:51 [PermaLink]You might think your year is bad - everybody does - but my year is the worst. How did I survive?
Check it out. Three Bee Gees and two Andy Gibbs in the top ten with a Debby Boone for a quick kick in the butt.
1. Shadow Dancing, Andy Gibb
2. Night Fever, Bee Gees
3. You Light Up My Life, Debby Boone
4. Stayin' Alive, Bee Gees
5. Kiss You All Over, Exile
6. How Deep Is Your Love, Bee Gees
7. Baby Come Back, Player
8. (Love Is) Thicker Than Water, Andy Gibb
9. Boogie Oogie Oogie, A Taste Of Honey
10. Three Times A Lady, Commodores
Geez, I had no idea 1976 was so bad. Barry Manilow, the Captain and Tennille, the Bay City Rollers, KC and the Sunshine Band, Disco Duck....AAARRRRGGGHHH! It did have "Bohemian Rhapsody," but really, talk about torture-chamber material....
Posted at 2005-08-29 19:33:05 [PermaLink]Whooee - old farts like me are looking pretty lucky when I compare the 1966 music to the post 1970's. 1965 was damn good too.
Satisfaction, Rolling Stones
My Girl, Temptations
You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', Righteous Brothers
Help!, The Beatles
Shotgun, Jr. Walker and The All Stars
Help Me, Rhonda, Beach Boys
Unchained Melody, Righteous Brothers
Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, James Brown and The Famous Flames
What the hell - My Generation by the Who was left off? The compiler of this list must be on drugs.
I graduated in 1989 ... four Milli Vanilli songs in the top 30. Looking at the lists from some of these years, I wonder why I bothered listening to the radio in high school.
Posted at 2005-08-29 20:37:56 [PermaLink]"Sex and drugs are mighty fine.
So is the Class of '79"
...but apparently it didn't include the music. Sheesh!! I really don't remember it sucking that bad. I crossed out all but maybe 3-4. It might have been that a couple of the good (imo) albums (LZ, AC/DC, PF, etc) that came out that year either didn't make the top-100 or came out too late. It could also be that with having an older brother and sister I just paid more attention to their music from the late-60s to mid-70s.
Dear God, I'm old...

96. I Don't Wanna, Aaliyah (don't wanna what, Aaliyah)
97. Independent Women Part I, Destiny's Child (see #4
99. Waiting For Tonight, Jennifer Lopez (waiting for you to go away)
Quick question about the '80s (I think): There was a song (sung in German?) called "99 Luftballoons".
My spelling must be wrong, I can't find it by google. Does anyone remember the name of the group who did it (or some other identifying information)?
Never mind, I found it... LuftballOns not LuftballOOns
