Rolling Stone is doing what countless other companies interested in making money have done before them. They exploit the predictability and blind tenacity of the US Christian right to move units. They're already pissed at Kanye so it's a two for one deal on redneck incitement.
The editors are high fiving because they'll get Rolling Stone magazine mentioned 10 times daily by cranky bible-thumping asshats. The catch is, these people have easy access to the press and can get their messages out to everyone. If they're lucky, Bill O'Reilly will pick up the story and expose it more. Now everyone knows about it, and since much of Rolling Stone's demographic generally despises the US right, it works as a reverse endorsement for them, i.e. if Pat Robertson hates it, it must be good. Add to that the people curious to see what the big deal is and you could have the issue of the year.
It has nothing to do with free speech and everything to do with free press coverage.
Now quick, somebody tell me how Mohammed is going to sell more magazines for them.

Rolling Stone is not in the business of free speech, they're in the business of making money. If free speech helps them accomplish that, then I'm sure they support it, but they won't take a loss to promote it.
Dara: exactly! The magazine cover isn't about freedom of expression, it merely panders to gullible types who will think that it is. Someone needs to interview the editors publicly and ask them point-blank when their Mohammed cover will be coming out. We'll then get the inevitable "Christians don't issue fatwas" explanation, and the hypocrisy will be exposed.
