“Hegel remarks somewhere that all great, world-historical facts and personages occur, as it were, twice. He has forgotten to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.”
Karl Marx - and Kofi is in the middle of both (the first being Rwanda).
Excellent post Mark - too bad Dallaire ain't reading it. Then again, he really didn't accomplish much in Rwanda other than witness the massacre.
Excellent analysis Mark, now we just need to keep kicking asses and taking names.
Given the Chinese and Russian Communist regimes have liquidated some 75 million and 60 million lives respectively, one would be truly living in a dreamworld to hope that the vipers with "business interests", in the Sudan, would suddenly, like Paul on the road to Damascus, turn over a new leaf.
Regimes like these on the Security Council continue to drag their feet because the only thing that matters to them is staying in power and keeping the money train rolling. If a few hundred thousand lives are lost in the wash, that is just the "price of doing business".
Unfortunately, a very harsh and discomfitting view, but laced with a strong dose of reality.
Gwyn's hinge pins weren't in too tight to begin with, but he's really lost the plot here.

Posted at 2006-05-05 10:46:38 [PermaLink]Always a lecture, never a plan. Is there anyone with the intellectual capability and vigour to set out _how_ to accomplish the aims (eg. prevent a veto; persuade Sudan; create, deploy, and sustain a force), rather than what the aims should be?

Look at you guys. You sit here in your internet message board and complain that Roméo Dallaire didn't do enough in Rawanda. How about he is credited with saving thousands of lives. What isn't that enough for you? How many lives have you saved?
