Hey, Layton walks on water so obviously thinks our troops can do likewise. Maybe he'd like them to drive the Leopards out there...
Oh wait! He's not WALKING on water, he's full of hot air!!
And what if these foreign fishing fleets refuse to comply? What if they draw weapons? In Jack bin Layton's world, our military would be helpless and would have to negotiate the size of the catch the foreigners would be permitted to take - all in order to keep the peace, in the grandest of Canadian military traditions.
Posted at 2006-09-13 13:51:41 [PermaLink]Mark, read up on the issues and history in Newfoundland and you might be surprised (though you shouldn't be) at how many people in the province think that's not such a bad idea.
A Portuguese trawler with a long list of overfishing violations was busted again last week for catching fish way below the legal size.
Sending the military and Navy isn't such a bad idea.
I don't have a problem with enforcing these issues either, it just sounds kind of stupid coming from layton. Negotiate with the taliban, but use the armed forces against foreign fishing boats.
And the most pathetic thing of all - layton doesn't mean it, he knows people want action so he tries to con them with tough talk. I don't think anyone will be fooled.
Mark: It's getting harder all of the time for the Cannonball Press to cover the NDP. They persistently out parody themselves.
"Layton also said those troops would be more effective at protecting Canada's fishing grounds from foreign trawlers."
Can't we all picture the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry tossing their cookies over the side of one of Canada's maritime patrol vessels [External Link] while looking through the fog for those dastardly Spanish fishermen (fisherpeople?). I wouldn't want to be the sniper in the crows nest.
Then again, that takes care of the Leopard tanks issue.
Taliban Jack of the High Seas! AAAARRR! Matey!

The need for increased enforcement of foreign fishing violations does not vindicate yet another typically disingenuous attempt by Jack to undermine the mission in Afghanistan.
The presence of CF resources and personnel in Afghanistan does not in any way prevent other CF resources and personnel from being deployed to patrol our coasts. We're talking about radically different resources being required for two radically different missions; infantry vs naval.
Jack claims that our mission in Afghanistan is impeding our ability to catch foreign trawlers fishing illegally. If the argument wasn't so dishonest, it would warrant a chuckle.
Mark:
Interesting, isn't it, that the CBC article avoided mentioning the obvious when reporting Layton's latest swipe at the Aghanistan mission?
Any recent arrival from another planet would be excused for assuming that the Taliban navy was doing a helluva job tying up our fleet.
What happened to the "guard" part of Coastguard...
