Welcome back, Damian, and A Very Prosperous New Year to you!
Haha, I was watching "Back to the Future" last week on TV and realized with amusement that we're only 8 years away from the 30-year "future" of 1985 where we all are driving flying cars in the sky. Maybe by 2015 it will actually become a reality.
Or then again, maybe not.
Side note: Anyone else a little concerned about NASA, with its record of space shuttle disasters, managing our air roadways of the future? I mean, how much would you trust them?
There are enough bad drivers on the roads of Toronto now - the thought of them taking to the sky - yikes. And don't even mention Montreal where the drivers are so immature they aren't allowed to turn right on a red light (only applies to the island of Montreal).

Dan, you're correct, the fuel systems in these things will be rated in gallons per minute.
segacs, on the bright side, NASA has at least managed to avoid crashing two separate vessels into each other, so they are 100% on air traffic control.
Other than simple concerns about how badly people operate heavy machinery in a 2D environment and movig that skill set to 3D, think about the maintenance issues and the willingness of the average person to keep their car running properly. A clunker in the sky turns into a kamikaze bomber pretty damn fast.
Also, consider the cost of burying every single powerline in the country, or replacing them one at a time by following the smoke plumes on the horizon.

Dara; re "Also, consider the cost of burying every single powerline in the country, or replacing them one at a time by following the smoke plumes on the horizon."
Heheh... we'd be trading winter storm blackouts for year round blackouts. Man, dont'cha just love progress.
Looks like a very Kyoto friendly means of transport
