If there had lived large native populations in New England and the colonists had tried to exploit them, there would be more failed village sites for archaeologists to comb for ruins and split skulls. As narrow-minded as the early English settlers were, they had not the ruthless instincts. By nature they were pacifists, not conquistadors.
