In context, I read his reference to Christ as rhetorical metaphor or analogy as opposed to revealing personal religious motivation. I'd need more evidence to implicate the latter.

I thought the usually savvy Mark Steyn was particularly loathsome in his National Review Corner commentary regarding the "cowards" theme. When people write that kind of stuff from the safety of distance and retrospect - when their own sorry asses weren't facing a killer with guns - I lose respect for their arguments and their general perspective.
