"We have crazies just like other faiths have them," said Eide Alawan, who directs interfaith outreach at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Mich."

True enough. The problem is you have far more than other faiths and they tend to be far more violent.

"Andrew Kohut, Pew director, said in an interview that support for the attacks represented "one of the few trouble spots" in the survey."

No shit Sherlock.

Not to take the comparison too far, but I'm reminded a bit of the relationship between Irish-Catholic Americans and the IRA during the 70's and early 80's.

As worrying and frightening as this, no doubt.

Correct me if I am wrong butI don't believe this site covered this poll.Selective amnesia perhaps.

Exactly the kind of attitude that ensures that the US is one of the 3 most unpopular nations in the world according to a recent survey.

Obviously one needs to put one's house in order before attempting to moralise.

Comment by Richard Aubrey:

Yeah, the US is unpopular. So is a tough parent.
But you can slag off the US all you want and nothing will happen. As one historian said, it was known during the Cold War that if you acted against the USSR, you'd pay dearly. If you acted against the US, you'd have a lineup of US diplomats asking what they could do to make it up to you.
The primary reason, IMO, that the US is unpopular is the general feeling that the US doesn't care that other people think ill of us.
Who are they that we should worry?
Got to be infuriating.

Comment by John B:

I find it funny that, as the U.S. supposedly becomes more and more unpopular, people continue lining up to get in - legally or illegally.

Kind of reminds me of a story I heard first hand right after the Shah was deposed in Iran. The American recounted how he was accosted in Tehran by Iranians who supposedly despised the U.S. for its roll in support of the Shah (plus various other faults) and in the next sentence, asked how they could emigrate to America. Frankly, I don't give a damn what the rest of the world thinks of me (I'm not American btw).

Comment by John Palubiski:

The comparson between the IRA and the jihadis is specious.

The IRA had clearly defined political goals and many of their attacks targeted politicans in an effort to further those goals. They murdered individuals of quality

The jihadis are irrational nutcases with no clear goals. They'll kill just about anyone with a kind of scattershot abandon. They murder quantities of individuals.

And Ajushail, spare us your moralising. When you're hamstrung by such odious figures as Mohammed, you really haven't any right to sanctimonious finger pointing.

Comment by ak:

Wait, what?? We're unpopular?! You mean with lunatic Islamicists and their dimwitted PC-slave apologizers? With people who fervently subscribe to conspiracy theories so insane they sound like bad comedy? With people who obviously know so little about history that you can explode their fierce little arguments with one or two easily provable facts? With world leaders who chastize others while ignoring or making fortunes out of human misery? With mass media either so arrogant or so stupid that it can't even cover its own lies? With radical chic first-worlders who slaver over murdering dictators?

Yeah, gee, I'm so ashamed they don't like us.

"The IRA had clearly defined political goals"

So does al Qaeda.

"many of their attacks targeted politicans in an effort to further those goals."

So does al Qaeda.

"They murdered individuals of quality"

That's true - like Lord Mountbatten, his 14 year old grandson, and a 15 year old Protestant who was working as a crewman on Mountbatten's boat. But they also committed more or less random murders, for example bombing pubs in Britain, and they provided technical expertise to terrorists as far away as Latin America.

And al Qaeda has certainly killed many people "of quality," too.

Comment by ak:

Bruce, do you remember any Irish-American Catholics dancing in the streets after pub bombings? Neither do I.

The realities of terrorism turned off most people who had some romantic idea of "freedom fighters." It didn't inspire them to ditch their jobs and families and go train in IRA camps.

The present jihadis have a clear agenda. It is the world wide imposition of sharia law. They believe that once the "law" is imposed in an area the area is then islamic.

Bruce, John P., Dan - welcome to the "Losers Club" as defined by aj. Must get together for a beer (haram of course) some time.

"The polling in Iran was fielded by an independent Iranian agency from October 31 – December 6, 2006"

Hmm. Independent Iranian agency? Sure, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Note of course this poll canvases Iranians and not Pakistanis, Egyptians or Arabs. The Persians consider themselves a cut above the rest in this neighbourhood. I also find it interesting that, while in theory some Americans consider attacks on civilians as sometimes justified, the Religion of Peace (TM) carries out such attacks on a daily basis.

See Sunni vs Shia, the weekly (almost daily) murders of Thia Buddhists by Muslims, Christians being killed or harassed in Indonesia, Pakistan or Egypt. In aj's cloistered world of course, this counts for little.

Comment by John Palubiski:

Ajushail, a true loser is one who embraces a tryannical brigand and then elevates the scoundrel to the ranks of a prophet.

At the end of the Turkish Sultanate Kemal Attaturk described islam as "nothing but a putrified carcass founded by an immoral Bedouin".

Are you planning to dig him up and behead him?

Staying with Turkey, did anyone closely study the photos of those pro-secular demonstrations?

I did, and found something very strange. Almost all the demos were held in the country's western regions, traditional Greco-Byzantine land. Pro-secular demonstrators are almost entirely caucasian in appearence...to look at them you'd think you were in Belgrade and not occuppied Smyrna.

The Islamist crowd, on the other hand, are largely Turkomen in appearence; they closely resemble their cousins of the deserts of Central Asia.

So is this struggle, at least on some level, race-based?

Were those 1.5 million demonstrators in "Izmir", many of whom were blond, merely the descendants of the Devshirm ( slavs and such) taking their revenge on the Ottomans?

Were we watching the descendants of Orthodox Christians, with collective unconscious still intact, pushing back the eastern hordes, except under the banner of secularism rather than Eastern Christianity?

I'm wondering, too, if those pro-secular demos in Pakistan haven't racial undertones.

Not that I expect it will do Ajsuhail any good, but here are some very interesting comments from an article in the Wall Street Journal by Tawfik Hamad:

"To bring an end to Islamophobia, we must employ a holistic approach that treats the core of the disease. It will not suffice to merely suppress the symptoms. It is imperative to adopt new Islamic teachings that do not allow killing apostates (Redda Law)."

"We Muslims should publicly show our strong disapproval for the growing number of attacks by Muslims against other faiths and against other Muslims. Let us not even dwell on 9/11, Madrid, London, Bali and countless other scenes of carnage. It has been estimated that of the two million refugees fleeing Islamic terror in Iraq, 40% are Christian, and many of them seek a haven in Lebanon, where the Christian population itself has declined by 60%. Even in Turkey, Islamists recently found it necessary to slit the throats of three Christians for publishing Bibles."

"Why do we hear no Muslim condemnation of the ongoing slaughter of Buddhists in Thailand by Islamic groups? Why was there silence over the Mumbai train bombings which took the lives of over 200 Hindus in 2006?"

"Islamophobia could end when masses of Muslims demonstrate in the streets against videos displaying innocent people being beheaded with the same vigor we employ against airlines, Israel and cartoons of Muhammad. It might cease when Muslims unambiguously and publicly insist that Shariah law should have no binding legal status in free, democratic societies."

Assjihad is sooo lucky to be permitted to post here.

Run a few searches on him: He's left a wide track record of ignorance, bigotry and hatred - even for fellow Muslims who aren't Sunni. Some of the nasty stuff he says about Iran's Shi'a makes his love of Jews look mild. (Real classy.)

The illegitimate is a pig who fouls everything he touches. He's even borrowing lingo from lefties... probably spends too much time at Rubert's sight.

Assjihad hates Rubert too (the stupid dhimmi.) But he'll use Rubert for the sucker he is.

My suggestion is that we ignore this dog's bastard pig completely. Great having him around, though. Always fun to see what he thinks.
