Comments: The crime of visiting Cuba
Comment by Ran:

We are supposed to belay enforcing the law over threats of "bad publicity?"

So this guy "knew he was taking a risk"... but he didn't have the intelligence to enquire further? My heart goes out to Maher - both for his illness and his gross stupidity.

What a soapbox, though! Perfect opportunity for Ed Boadbent wannabe's to practice their thirty second indignation.

Oh - d'ya think El Sicko Moore isn't making "a profit" on Maher's medical plight? He is, handsomely. More so than any evil American physician alive. Moore makes a point of parasitically manipulating the most public, most vulnerable people available. *That* makes Moore an hypocrite of leftist proportions.

I've said this for a long time, the U.S. embargo of Cuba is probably the main reason Castro is still around. In other Communist countries (particularly Eastern Europe and the Russia) increasing contact with western democracies and economies illustrated beyond doubt how bankrupt communism was.

Comment by Bruce Rheinstein:

The U.S. embargo is stupid, and it gives Castro an excuse for his failures, but that doesn't stop Canadians and Europeans from having contact. Castro is still around because there is no alternative power structure to challenge him.

Rather than wasting time & money on Michael Moore's "Sicko" - apt title to describe its author - I suggest the following:

1. Go see this:
[External Link]
"“It’s an engrossing, and convincing, indictment of Moore’s shady, manipulative tactics as a documentarian. And it shows him to be a thin-skinned, selfish-minded human being, with a dark history of screwing his friends on the left.”

2. Read this:
[External Link]
"For one man, private health care brought salvation"

3. Read this:
[External Link]
"Fred Thompson takes on Michael Moore, Hollywood and the strange infatuation with Fidel Castro."

4. Is the Bill Maher mentioned in the post THIS Bill Maher? :-)

Oops! My apologies for repeating what BBS posted at 2007-06-26 14:54:38 (a link to "Manufacturing Dissent")
I had not read that particular entry.
