A long way to go yet, but there are grounds for optimism now. If the security situation continues to improve, and Iraq is relatively peaceful by this time next year, the White House may remain in Republican hands, courtesy of these four spoken words, which will relentlessly dog the Democratic Party during the Presidential campaign:

"this war is lost."

Harry Reid, April 19th 2007.

"Reminds one of Taliban Jack."

Any ideas for a similar, suitable moniker for Reid?

Comment by Bruce Rheinstein:

"'Basic services, ruined by years of war and sanctions, cannot meet the needs of the Iraqi people,' said Jeremy Hobbs, the director of Oxfam International. 'Millions of Iraqis have been forced to flee the violence, either to another part of Iraq or abroad. Many of those are living in dire poverty.'"

Damn, sound pretty serious. It's a good thing we have first-hand reporting from Oxfam to keep us apprised of the situation.

Oh, wait, "Oxfam has not operated in Iraq since 2003."
